Allison in Africa

I have been to Kenya three times, totaling nearly twelve months from 2003-2008. This blog is filled with a few of my thoughts, stories and pictures from my second and third trips (January-March 2006 and May-August 2008), mainly around Kitale and Mt. Elgon in the Rift Valley Province.

Olaf Palme Agroforestry Center

Morning tea at SCC-Vi Agroforestry was served between 9-9:30am. SCC-Vi was a pretty sweet place to work because we got tea and a snack every morning just for being there. Teatime served as a good opportunity to network and see what everyone else was up to. Since so many of the daily activities are dependent on other members of staff, who are often in other buildings (there were three main buildings on site), this morning tea was the best time to set up meetings and joint ventures, as well as read the newspaper, watch monkeys, and gossip.

Hi Mophat! (More-fat is how I finally remembered his name) This smily guy was one of the grounds keepers. His tool of choice for most things, including weeding was a panga, or machete. Somehow it worked."Come QUICK!" someone yelled, "it looks like they are dissecting an animal outside!!!". I emerged from the monitoring and evaluation office to find this:

In fact, the animal was a large fruit, which had been harvested in order to get it's seeds propagated in the nursery. Have you seen a fruit like this before? You eat the rubbery, lychee like flesh from around the seeds and wonder how a fruit that looks like that could possibly have so much sugar packed into it's flesh. It tasted tropical... pineapple, banana, mango all rolled into one.
And here you go, the mystery is solved. A jackfruit.
